When life changes

Writer: Jennifer DavisJennifer Davis

You make adjustments, you figure it out, and you move forward—because life doesn’t wait for the perfect interest rate or the right politician to come along.

People buy or sell homes for all kinds of reasons, but in my experience, it almost always comes down to major life events—things that leave you with no choice but to deal with the cards you’ve been dealt. New jobs, divorces, growing families, aging parents, empty nests, health issues, financial ups and downs—you name it.

When life changes, your home often has to change with it.

The funny thing is, people like to talk about interest rates or who’s in office as if those things are the driving forces behind the housing market. But let me tell you, when it’s time to move, those factors are just part of the noise. Sure, interest rates matter. Prices matter too. But they’ve always been factors, haven’t they? At the end of the day, if you’ve got to move, you’ve got to move.

I’ve seen folks sell their big dream homes and downsize to something smaller because it’s all they can afford after a financial hit. I’ve seen families pick up and move farther outside of town to find something within their budget, willing to trade convenience for affordability. And then there are the people who don’t want to move but have no choice—a new job in another state, a divorce that splits one household into two, or the bittersweet moment when the kids move out, and you realize it’s just too much house for two people.

Moving is rarely easy, but it’s always personal.

It’s not about the economy as much as it’s about people’s lives. Every transaction has a story behind it. A couple buying their first home, nervous and excited all at once. A widow saying goodbye to the home she’s lived in for decades. A family upgrading to a bigger place because their kids are tired of sharing rooms.

Moving is rarely easy, but it’s always personal. You make adjustments, you figure it out, and you move forward—because life doesn’t wait for the perfect interest rate or the right politician to come along.

Life happens, and when it does, your home has to keep up with it.
